First-time home buyers pick up local market

LYNDEN — It is a tale of two markets right now for local real estate.
Jerry Blankers, broker for Snapper Shuler Kenner Real Estate, said that low-end sales are doing quite well, while the houses on the upper end are still a bit slow.
“We are steady,” he said. “We aren’t setting the world on fire. It is not a great year, but we are not throwing in the towel.”
Brett Hendricks honored for fast start at Edward Jones Financial

LYNDEN -- Brett Hendricks, a local Edward Jones financial advisor, is doing a fine job — or so says his boss.
Hendricks, whose office is located at 8874 Bender Rd., Suite 106, in Bender Plaza, was given a Pacesetters Award for his outstanding performance within the first three years of his career. He is one of 157 financial advisors out of the firm’s 10,000 to receive the award.
Kitchen Konnection moves to Front St.

LYNDEN -- The garage door is open, so come on in and enjoy Kitchen Konnection’s move to 517 Front St.
Lori Bosman, owner, moved her shop out of the Dutch Village Mall and opened along Front Street after the Heritage Celebration parade on June 6.
She boasts about 1,100 square feet of space for her kitchen gadgets, bake ware and kitchen paper products.
Homestead trying to avoid bankruptcy

LYNDEN -- Jim Wynstra, owner of The Homestead Group, says that his companies are in a “fluid” situation.
A letter he sent to investors dated May 20 is now “obsolete,” according to Wynstra, and a new tack is being followed.
A new letter is reportedly being drafted updating the situation.
The May 20 letter outlines a business plan for the coming months, including challenges and goals. The first step was to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy “ASAP.”
New Mexican restaurant to open in Bender Plaza

LYNDEN -- Uriel Lopez wants to create a cozy restaurant full of traditional Mexican-style dishes.
Lopez, formerly a co-owner of La Herradura in Lynden’s Fairway Center, is branching out on his own and opening Cancun Mexican Restaurant in the Bender Plaza site formerly occupied by CB’s Taqueria.
He hopes to open the doors for the first time sometime this weekend.
Edaleen Dairy recalls two ice cream products

LYNDEN -- Edaleen Dairy took voluntary action to recall its Tin Roof Sundae and Chocolate Peanut Butter Nut ice cream products this month.
Both ice cream flavors were made with peanut products manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, which had a Salmonella issue earlier in the year.
While there is no evidence that the peanuts sent to Edaleen through a distributor were tainted with Salmonella, the products were placed on a recall list by Peanut Corporation on May 8 and Edaleen took action to end production of its peanut-included ice cream, according to Mitch Moorlag, Edaleen’s co-owner and ice cream manager.
Birch Bay Square gets boost from groceries

Levi Ware, whose family has been involved in the redevelopment of Birch Bay Square, stands in front of The Market grocery store, which opened last week.
BIRCH BAY – Birch Bay now can boast a grocery store of its own.
The Nuthouse Grill getting a new owner

LYNDEN -- Tony Tholl feels right at home at The Nuthouse Grill.
The originator of Homestead Farm's Duffer’s Restaurant, Tholl is in the process of taking over ownership of Bender Plaza’s The Nuthouse Grill.
He is currently the manager of the restaurant until the transfer of the liquor license into his name takes effect and he can sign the papers to purchase the establishment and running a restaurant is nothing new for Tholl.
